Gardening for Birds, Hummingbirds & Butterflies & Planting on a Slope

Ideas for attracting birds, hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden will be shared in this workshop that takes place in a certified wildlife habitat garden.  The class will begin with the speaker discussing the benefits of attracting these creatures to our gardens, followed by the sharing of ideas of what humans can provide in the way of plants that provide food, nectar and shelter and why not to use pesticides in your garden.   A tour of the speaker’s hillside terraced garden will show examples of gardening on a slope and plants that attract birds and butterflies.
This garden is featured in the April 2013 issue of San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles magazine.

Instructor: Marcia Van Loy

Marcia Van Loy has been a volunteer with the Master Gardener Association for 12 years.  She has gardened for over 25 years in the Clairemont area of San Diego and in the past coordinated their Town Council’s annual garden tour for 9 years.  After many years of collecting rustic bird houses, she now teaches Master Gardeners how to build them as a way to raise funds for their educational programs.  Her water feature, nest boxes, seed and nectar feeders and plants that provide food, roosting and nesting sites and places to raise young, enhance her wildlife habitat garden.  Growing flowers that provide nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies and growing their host plants in her hillside terraced garden is one of Marcia’s favorite subjects to share with others.

To be held Rain or Shine

Registration will close three days before the event.  If you must cancel, be considerate and allow enough time to let another member register and attend.
